We’re highlighting a teacher every Wednesday as a part of the #RedForEd campaign.
Every year is a great year to celebrate our teachers, but this year has shined a bright light on the flexibility and compassion of our incredible staff.
Today we’re highlighting Ms. Sarah Mains, a special education teacher at Deming Elementary School.
What motivates you?
I love working with my K-1 students! I think they have such brilliant minds wrapped up in tiny bodies. They are all different, with diverse personalities and possibilities and make coming to work each day an eventful experience.
How has your job changed due to COVID?
COVID changed the roles of educators overnight. In my position, I have learned how to adapt to a new routine with new technology. It’s always nice to be pushed outside of your comfort zone and I’ve learned that teachers can do ((virtually)) anything!
What is something that people don’t understand about your job?
Special Education teachers are beyond flexible! We are constantly adjusting, differentiating, advocating, soothing, modifying, and adapting whatever (and whenever!) to ensure each child has a successful day and that they look forward to coming back the next day.
Why do you love VCSC/your school?
I love the school climate here at Deming! The positivity and support from my colleagues and principal this year have made me realize how lucky I am to be a Deming Star. We truly are a team that Shines Bright!
Be sure to check back on #Staffurday–Saturday, that is–as we recognize members of our non-teaching staff. We’ll continue both campaigns through the end of the school year.
