We’re highlighting a teacher every Wednesday as a part of the #RedForEd campaign.
Every year is a great year to celebrate our teachers, but this year has shined a bright light on the flexibility and compassion of our incredible staff.
Today we’re highlighting Mrs. Jennifer Ferguson, a first grade teacher at West Vigo Elementary School.
What motivates you?
I want the children in my classroom to have all the necessary tools they need to succeed! Everything I do, I do it for them! I want them to realize just how bright their star can shine.
How has your job changed due to COVID?
Last year, we were able to do so much with the other 1st graders. All the little fun extras, the things that really make things exciting for the kids, have to change. We can’t get together with the other classrooms for special celebrations or group work.
What is something that people don’t understand about your job?
Teaching is definitely not a 9-5 job with summers off. You are constantly working, trying to figure out the best way to deliver information so the children understand it. You take your work home with you, not because you have to, but because you want to. You want to figure out a way to reach that child that just isn’t getting it. You want to find the path to take to turn their light on.
Why do you love VCSC/your school?
I absolutely LOVE working for Mrs. Staggs! She is incredibly supportive and you can tell that she genuinely cares about all the students! I feel very blessed to be able to work with her!
Be sure to check back on #Staffurday–Saturday, that is–as we recognize members of our non-teaching staff. We’ll continue both campaigns through the end of the school year.
