Class Offerings

Elective Swimming and Lifeguarding

Dress code for swimming:

Appropriate swimming attire

Goggles 

Swim bag – will be provided if needed

Towels available if needed

  1. Students are to be dressed and in the classroom by:
  • Morning Class periods 1 & 2  – 8:10am- Dressed and ready to swim at 8:15am
  • Afternoon Class periods 6 & 7 – 2:30pm – Dressed and ready to swim at 2:35pm

 

2. Dress code for swimming:

3. 4. Participation:

  • 25 points are earned for daily participation in class  –  total of 125 points per week
  • Zero points are earned for any absences unless made up. Make up work will be worth ½ credit.
  • You will be given 3 personal days (no dress) for the semester. 

5. Grading Scale:

  • Homework/Classroom Work – 20% of grade 
  • Participation – 50% of grade
  • Skills Test  / Final – 30% of grade

6. Absences: 

  • A doctor’s excuse is required for non-participation
  • With a medical excuse the student will be given an alternate assignment during the class.
  • Students should notify the instructor of any medical conditions that would limit participation.

7. Learning Outcomes:

  1. 2 year Lifeguard certification will be earned at the end of the semester
  2. Work on stroke mechanics and improve swimming efficiency
  3. Proficiency in First Aid/CPR/AED + Lifeguarding
  4. How to respond to an emergency based on the American Red Cross standard
  5. Students may pass the course for a school grade without earning an ARC LG certification if certification requirements are not met. 

8. Misc:

  • You may not have food or drink in the locker room or in class. 
  • The use of cell phones is not permitted – it must be left in your locker.
  • Remember to take your belongings home and wash them regularly.
  • Poor behavior and lack of professionalism can result in non-certification. 
  • Always be respectful of the teacher’s right to teach, other students’ right to learn, and everyone in the classroom.
  • NO cell phone or gum in my classroom.
  • Arrive to class on time every day with ALL your needed books and supplies.
  • I will dismiss you at the end of class – NOT the bell.
