Elective Swimming and Lifeguarding
Dress code for swimming:
Appropriate swimming attire
Goggles
Swim bag – will be provided if needed
Towels available if needed

- Students are to be dressed and in the classroom by:
- Morning Class periods 1 & 2 – 8:10am- Dressed and ready to swim at 8:15am
- Afternoon Class periods 6 & 7 – 2:30pm – Dressed and ready to swim at 2:35pm
2. Dress code for swimming:

3. Grading is based on dress, participation, written assignments, quizzes, written exams, and skills tests. All written and skills tests are required by the Red Cross to earn certification. The minimum grade is 80%.
4. Participation:
- 25 points are earned for daily participation in class – total of 125 points per week
- Zero points are earned for any absences unless made up. Make up work will be worth ½ credit.
- You will be given 3 personal days (no dress) for the semester.
5. Grading Scale:
- Homework/Classroom Work – 20% of grade
- Participation – 50% of grade
- Skills Test / Final – 30% of grade
6. Absences:
- A doctor’s excuse is required for non-participation
- With a medical excuse the student will be given an alternate assignment during the class.
- Students should notify the instructor of any medical conditions that would limit participation.
7. Learning Outcomes:
- 2 year Lifeguard certification will be earned at the end of the semester
- Work on stroke mechanics and improve swimming efficiency
- Proficiency in First Aid/CPR/AED + Lifeguarding
- How to respond to an emergency based on the American Red Cross standard
- Students may pass the course for a school grade without earning an ARC LG certification if certification requirements are not met.
8. Misc:
- You may not have food or drink in the locker room or in class.
- The use of cell phones is not permitted – it must be left in your locker.
- Remember to take your belongings home and wash them regularly.
- Poor behavior and lack of professionalism can result in non-certification.
- Always be respectful of the teacher’s right to teach, other students’ right to learn, and everyone in the classroom.
- NO cell phone or gum in my classroom.
- Arrive to class on time every day with ALL your needed books and supplies.
- I will dismiss you at the end of class – NOT the bell.
