Meet the Staff
By Brionna Myers
Do you ever wonder what exactly our front office staff does? We see them all the time yet we may not even know anything about what they do. We also don’t probably know all of the work and effort the front office staff does without us even knowing. Here you can get to know one of them a little better.
Mrs. Petscher, but many of us may also know her as Mrs. Jennie. Mrs. Petscher’s job is athletic secretary, but since the school is so small she also does payroll. She has been working for Vigo County “Schools” for 30 years, but has been working at West Vigo High School for eight years. Mrs. Petscher’s favorite thing about her job is being able to get to know the students. One of the hardest things about her job is trying to keep up with all of the technology changes since it changes so often. One of the most important things she does is payroll which is very important to the rest of the school staff. The most rewarding thing for her is seeing students succeed and also being able to see some of the students she worked with in elementary school and now being able to see them graduate. Outside of school Mrs. Petscher enjoys spending time with her family and going for walks.
Don’t forget to say hello to Mrs. Jennie when you see her at the front office!

Meet Mrs. Anderson
By Emma Barbour- Morley
Mrs Anderson is an educational assistant for the special education department and is part time in the office. She schedules conferences and enrolls and withdrawals students for school. She loves her job very much. Mrs Anderson has three kids and eight grandchildren. She loves spending time with them. She loves playing with
her yorkie and loves baking in her spare time. Her favorite sports teams are West Vigo and the Chicago Cubs. She likes watching softball and basketball. Her children are 40, 36, and her daughter passed away at 18 years old. She has been doing her job for 29 years. Thanks for all you do, Mrs. Anderson!
Teacher Spotlight: Mrs. Lindsay
By: Red Bell
You may be very familiar with this teacher spotlight, Mrs. Lindsay! Mrs. Lindsay teaches Geometry, Algebra Lab, and Quantitative Reasoning. Last year she taught Algebra 1, and Algebra Lab. Mrs. Lindsay is also the freshman class sponsor, Spark sponsor, and Link Crew Coordinator. She’s known to have a very busy schedule, but always makes time for her students when they need her help. Mrs. Lindsay has been teaching for 10 years, this year is her 5th year teaching at West Vigo High School. Mrs. Lindsay plans on teaching through retirement, which she’s not sure when retirement will be for her, but she still has a long way to go. When Mrs. Lindsay started her career path, she started as a business major, and realized she wanted to work with a younger audience, which made her switch to an elementary major, she found this was too young of a group, and switched to teaching for high school math. Once she started teaching high schoolers, she found that’s what she wanted, and has stuck to it. She went to North White High School in Monon, Indiana (her mascot was also a viking!) and North White Middle School which was connected to the high school, just like West Vigo.
Mrs. Lindsay views herself as a teacher that can explain well, but over-explain, which is not a bad thing, but she wants to find a middle ground so her students can think for themselves a bit more. Over-explaining is better than under-explaining. A word of advice from Mrs. Lindsay; teachers care more about your effort than how much you retain. Mrs. Lindsay states, and I quote, “I don’t care how much of what you learn in my class, I care about how you learn.”
I asked Mrs. Lindsay a few bonus questions for fun, just to know basic things about her outside of teaching;
Mrs. Lindsay’s favorite colors are purple and teal (as you can tell by her classroom). She enjoys Chinese food, and likes to listen to older music from when she was in middle school or high school. Mrs. Lindsay is also the mother of four kids, her oldest in his freshman year, and the youngest a toddler.
Mrs. Lindsay’s favorite quote:
If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” ~Wayne Dyer

Trading Places
By Garrett Hawthorne
dean of students and Mr. Kendall as a current events, U.S. History, and AP
U.S. History teacher, but what I later found out was it was not always this
way. I learned that Mr. Kendall was the dean last year, and Mr. Covert
was the history teacher also teaching World History and AP World History.
That made me wonder why they did this. This led me to thinking about
talking to them. This was easy seeing as I had Mr. Kendall for current events
class, and Mr. Covert is pretty easy to get a hold of.
I interviewed Mr. Kendall first, he told me that he started teaching in
2002. IN 2017 he was told that the job of dean was opened up. Mr. Kendall
has four degrees, Masters in education and school administration, and a
bachelors in social studies and communication. He graduated high school
from Terre Haute South and got all of his degrees from Indiana State
University (ISU). I asked him what the process of switching was, and he said it
was pretty complicated. Seeing as there where no open jobs at West Vigo he
had to apply at North for Mr. Covert to take his job as dean, then he would
take Mr. Covert’s job as a history teacher again. I asked him if he liked
teaching or being a dean better. Of course he answered teaching. He was
motivated to become a teacher because he loved his government classes in
college and high school and liked being around the students while student
teaching. This year is Mr. Kendall’s first year being back in the classroom since he took the job as a dean in 2017.
degree in school administration and supervision. He also has a principal
license. He was motivated to become a teacher and dean because he was a
police officer for six years and arrested lots of people. He felt like he wasn’t
helping anyone, but at the same time, he coached a freshman girls basketball
team and loved the experience of being in the school. He was motivated
enough to become a teacher and dean. When he was teaching and Mr.
Kendall was dean, Mr. Kendall had told him that he was going to leave the
dean position and joked around about Mr. Covert becoming dean again. To
Mr. Kendall’s surprise he actually wanted to become dean again and told him
he would. In order for Mr. Covert to become dean again the spot had to be
open. Mr. Kendall applied at North so Mr. Covert could become dean
again and Mr. Kendall could take his position. Mr. Covert likes the dean
position better because he wants to help all students and not just the kids he is
teaching. When he was teaching he had mostly juniors, and felt like he didn’t
years and keeps students on time and keeps the building under control.
Thank you Mr. Kendall and Mr. Covert!

Teacher Spotlight: Mr. Petscher
By: Audrey Evitts
Mr. Petscher is the printing and graphic design teacher that has been here for 46 years! He taught my parents when they were in school, and he might’ve taught some of your family and friends! Mr. Petscher’s wife, Jennie, also works at the school. She’s a part of the office staff.
Petscher’s class usually makes designs for fliers, business cards, and t-shirts. Some of our WVHS shirts were designed or printed by him.The reason he’s been teaching for so long is because he wants to make differences in people’s lives. His favorite school year so far is this one. Mr. Petscher has three college degrees!
He says the good side of his job is working with and teaching kids, while the bad is coming back to school and assigning tests. He said if he had to choose another subject to teach, he would choose art. This is his first year not coaching track, and he thought it was strange at first, but he said it’s nice to have free time to work on other projects.
Thank you Mr. Petscher for teaching and supporting our school!

Vikings Question of the Week
By Darcee Garrett
We had our very first question of the Day September 6th. The special question was “When it comes to coffee, what is the best flavor?” We had a hard fight between Caramel and Pumpkin Spice! Overall, caramel won by 8 votes, 31 to 39. We had the option to write your opinion and we had some good responses… and some funny responses. We had some that said they don’t like coffee, some that said tea or chocolate milk, cinnamon, white mocha, and hot chocolate was better. We also had some comments that said…”ranch”, “coffee sucks, get tea or hot chocolate”, “Coffee is nasty” and even links to some videos and songs. Our favorite song that was sent in would have to be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ. It was all great! Thank you Vikings for the responses, we will be doing another poll this week. Make sure you take a moment to give your input!
