Preparing for the Holidays
By Michael Montgomery
People are beginning to prepare for the holidays now as winter nears. It’s that time of the year to be with family. Nevertheless, holiday preparation isn’t straightforward for most families because of the time and brainstorming. Don’t worry, however, we’ll make it more accessible and faster for you to celebrate the holidays.
~ Five Ways to Prepare for the Holidays ~
- Plan Ahead- Start planning now to prevent planning at the last minute. Write your plans in a calendar or notebook. Include programs you want or need for the holidays. For example, you might plan on family traditions, community events you want to participate in, presents you want to make or give to other people, meals you want to serve, and hosting parties.
- Shop Ahead- Shopping earlier in the holiday season rather than later can decrease shopping chaos and reduce shopping hustling. If you have any people who want to give gifts to and brainstorm ideas for gifts, you’ll have to watch for perfect gifts and fantastic sales you want to give to. This way, holiday shopping will become less difficult and more effective.
- Cook/Bake Ahead- If you want to start baking holiday treats or meals, start making dishes and treats you want to serve traditionally. You can store already-made food in the freezer and use it for a party. You should start doing some now rather than later.
- Host exciting events for yourself and your family. This is highly recommended as the time to start brainstorming ideas for family-memory activities during the holiday season. What activities are available in my community? What special attractions are available near your place?
- Make it relevant enough. Keep your thoughts in mind, and decide what’s important to you and your family. Another way to reduce the holiday stress season is by giving little ideas to manage expectations. It’s better to just talk it out right now than to let it go.

Thanksgiving
By Frankie Gilbert
Thanksgiving is a national holiday every year. In 1621, the Plymouth and the Wampanoag people shared a harvest that is one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. Today people eat turkey pie squash and stuff like potatoes and even a break from school. You get to spend time with family and sometimes get a wish bone to break apart. Abe Lincoln made it a national holiday so Thanksgiving is in November every year. This year, Thanksgiving is on November 24th.
Winters-giving
By Jacob Lovell
Thanksgiving is a day of celebration of the harvest and past years, but what are some of the effects of winter around Thanksgiving? The effects of Thanksgiving are things like traveling to a family member’s house and the food you eat during the holiday. With the world going through global warming, we could run out of turkey or not be able to plant the right foods for Thanksgiving. Travel can be hard sometimes when you want to celebrate a holiday like Christmas or Thanksgiving because flights might be canceled or it may be too dangerous for a family member to travel during the winter times on foot, bike or any other vehicle. Thanksgiving food could get more expensive due to the blizzard-like weather. I hope your Thanksgiving will be as nice as mine this year.
