Do you know how Earth Day came to be?
By Hunter Dewey
Earth day promotes international awareness protection of Earth conservation.
The first Earth Day was in 1970 created by Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin.
Senator Nelson’s demonstration of environmental awareness was purposely set between spring break and the final exam week of students hoping that Caltech college students would participate. Around 20 million Americans showed their support for this event
Earth Day has its own song written by an Indian poet-diplomat, Abhay K in 2013. Earth Day went global in 1990 when it was demonstrated. It mobilized 200 million people and gave major awareness of environmental issues.
This is the 52nd anniversary of Earth Day. On Earth Day 2020, 20 million people worldwide tuned into the 12 hour Earth Day Live event hosted remotely due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

West Vigo Color Guard
By Olivia Moore
This year’s winter color guard team has worked extremely hard this season. From the beginning of February to the end of March, the guard has contests almost every single Saturday! Which they have placed first in almost every one of them!
The color guard’s first contest was February 12th at MT Vernon High School. The team came out on top with a first place win. It was very nerve racking; going out for a performance for the first time without most of the COVID restrictions. The team was very happy to be performing again! On their second time out on the floor at Brownsburg High School, they earned second place. The team still had an amazing time performing! The next contest was a little closer to home at Northview High School. They saw a lot of other amazing color guards performing that day!
At the end of the season includes prelims, semi- finals, and state finals. The team advanced past prelims placing 4th out of 56 other guard teams! The team also advanced past semi-finals and on to state competition, ranking 7th out of 16 other guards in their division!
When the team got to state, they were full of excitement and ready to win! They had one of the best runs of the entire season! The West Vigo Guard Team placed 4th out of the 16 other guards performing in their division! They scored an 80, which is the highest score West Vigo has ever received! The top 5 guards of Regional A Class (which WVHS is in) moved up another class, to Class A!
Going into Class A for next season is going to require more skills and more guard members. A big congrats to the entire West Vigo High School Winter Color Guard Team, and a big thank you to Mr. Gelb, coaches and everybody who helped and supported the team this season!
