National Nurses Day

By Emma Barbour- Morley

In February 1982 the American Nurses Association (ANA) board of directors formally acknowledged May 6, 1982 as National Nurses Day affirming a joint resolution of Congress that designated May 6th as a national recognition day for nurses. On March 25th that same year President Reagan signed a proclamation for May 6th to be recognized as National Nurses Day. In 1983, they designed May 6-12 as permanent dates for National Nurses Week. Some separate days were added later including May 6th as National Registered Nurse (RN) Recognition Day, and at the request of the National Student Nurses Association in 1998, May 8th became National Student Nurses Day. In 2003, National School Nurses Day was stated as Wednesday during National Nurses Week each year. Nurses now have a week to celebrate how hard they work to make people feel better. Nurses get to celebrate this day for years to come. National Nurses Day is important because they deliver high-quality patient care to positively impact society. Nurses are important to the healthcare system. Having this day each year has a positive impact on employee morale and improves engagement with patients and doctors for nurses working in healthcare today.
