Origin of the Coke Bottle
By Brayden Alkire
The Coke Bottle
Most Hoosiers know Terre Haute is the birthplace of the Coca-Cola bottle but how was that famous bottle created? The Root Glass Company made the first Coke bottle in 1915 in Terre Haute, Indiana. The company created a contest for a bottle so recognizable that you would be able to tell its shape in the dark. A five person team including J. Chapman, William Root, Earl Dean, Clyde Edwards, and the shop’s foreman, Alexander Samuelson came up with the design for the Coke bottle. They only sold 25 bottles when they first started making them. Today, there are 1.9 billion bottles being made every day. It only costs thirty cents to make one bottle of Coke, that’s more than it cost in 1915 when they first started making bottles of Coke. In 1915 it only cost one nickel to make a bottle of Coke. That really tells you how times have changed.
How does Coca-Cola produce Coke?
The Coca-Cola Company produces concentrate, which is then sold to licensed Coca-Cola bottlers throughout the world. Coca-Cola no longer makes its own bottles. The bottlers, who hold exclusive territory contracts with the company, produce the finished product in cans and bottles from the concentrate, in combination with filtered water and sweeteners.
The Coca-Cola Company has given us the same great taste since 1915 and continues to give us that taste today. When they first started to manufacture Coke, they really hit the nail on the head and today the Coca-Cola company is worth 277.36 billion dollars, that’s a ton of money. Coca-Cola has been around for 131 years and I think that it’s here to stay. Coca-Cola is being drunk in every country around the world. It’s crazy to think that everywhere you go in the world you can enjoy the delicious taste of Coca-Cola. It’s also crazy to think about how far Coca-Cola has come. I can’t wait to see what they come up with in the future.

About the Chicago Cubs
The Chicago Cubs, also called Cubbies or North Siders, are an American professional baseball team that plays its home games at Chicago’s Wrigley Field. Despite limited success, the Cubs have one of the most loyal fan bases and are among the most popular franchises in baseball. The Cubs play in the National League and have won three world series titles (1907,1908, and 2016). The team was originally known as the Chicago White Stockings, a charter member of the quick success. Led by Cap Anson, the team won six of the National League’s first 11 championships. Before adopting the name Cubs in 1903, (The Cubs name was first associated with the team the previous year) the team was known by a variety of names including the Colts and the Orphans.
The Curses of the Chicago Cubs
The curse began when the Chicago Cubs experienced their first of four World Series losses. This would then happen again over the next decade. In 1945, during game four of the World Series, the owner of the Billy Goat Tavern was asked to leave the ball game because his goat smelled so bad it bothered the fans. This was the beginning of the Billy Goat curse. For the next 20 seasons, the Cubs did not finish higher than fifth in the National League. In 1969, fans of the Cubs were starting to look hopeful until a black cat appeared on the field. This started the black cat curse when the Mets beat the Cubs. The Cubs won their first World Series in 108 years against the Cleveland Indians in 2016. This ended the curse!
