Principal

Mrs. Susan Lewis

Hello, and welcome to the Rio Grande website.  My name is Susan Lewis and I’m Principal of Rio Grande.  A bit about myself; I attended Indiana State University for my Bachelor of Science in Education.  I then obtained a Gifted and Talented Endorsement from Indiana University, and after that I earned my Master’s in K-12 Administration from Indiana State University.  Before I began teaching, I spent an entire summer in Evanston, Illinois studying the Montessori teaching style.  I have taught in Sullivan County (Fourth grade and Junior High Technology), in Vigo County at Lost Creek Elementary (Gifted and Talented Second and Third grade), and Dixie Bee (Third grade Gifted and Talented).  Before coming to Rio Grande in 2011, I was principal at Fayette Elementary.  As principal of Rio Grande, I am proud and eager to serve this outstanding school community.  Rio Grande has a strong academic program based on the Indiana Academic Standards.  All our teachers work hard to provide high quality learning experiences.  Our reading series is based on the research of the National Reading Panel.  Our math program, Everyday Math, is from the University of Chicago and is research based.  We are accredited by the State of Indiana and Cognia (formerly known as Advanc-Ed).  Our parents are very valuable to us here at Rio Grande.  They support us at home by monitoring homework, providing enrichment activities, and teaching their children about the value of a good education.  Many of our parents are involved in our very active and supportive PTO, please consider joining.  Should you have any questions regarding your child’s education, or our school, please don’t hesitate to contact me.  Susan.Lewis@vigoschools.org
