Every year is a great year to celebrate our staff, but this year has shined a bright light on the flexibility and compassion of our incredible staff.

Today, meet Mr. Joe Watts, a school protection officer at West Vigo High School.

What motivates you?
I have always been a motivated person, especially when helping others. Here at West Vigo High School, one cannot help but be motivated. The staff, students, and educational environment is an automatic motivator. When students routinely approach me and want to “discuss life issues” it is not only a daily reminder that our jobs are important and that we have the ability to make a student’s life
better, it too serves as a constant motivator and warms your heart.

How has your job changed due to COVID?
In general, COVID has caused us to wear masks, thus reducing the smiles we see in each other. I think smiles are important to all of us. As school protection officers, we have the responsibility to meet and greet each and every visitor to our school and with COVID, we obviously have less visitors and less personal interaction.

What is something that people don’t understand about your job?
Some people may not fully understand the duties of a school protection officer and may think we are just security. However, I take it upon myself to assist the staff with any task or assistance they may need and I work hard to establish a good rapport with the students. I feel establishing a trustworthy relationship with all students and staff, supports a better educational and work environment and ultimately provides the students with another conversational resource. I also believe the knowledge
and skills obtained thru my ISP career, as well as emergency medical knowledge gained thru previous ambulance service work experience enhances my abilities to help in any capacity.

Why do you love VCSC/your school?
The Vigo County School Corporation has allowed me to establish a post-career opportunity that I truly love and they have done this with the utmost respect and professionalism. As for the school I am assigned, West Vigo High School, I truly cannot say enough about the staff and students. The staff has went above and beyond to make me feel welcome and part of the family. They are definitely some of the absolute best people I have ever worked alongside. I often tell family, friends, and acquaintances that West Vigo High School is a “hidden gem” and a provides a culture that not only nurtures the students, but the staff as well. The “Viking Mentality” is very palpable and it is a true joy to be a part of it. Without a doubt, it is both an honor and a privilege to work with the West Vigo HS family and the Vigo County School Corporation.

Be sure to check back on Wednesday as we highlight another teacher for #RedforEd Wednesday!
Every year is a great year to celebrate our teachers, but this year has shined a bright light on the flexibility and compassion of our incredible staff.

Today we’re highlighting Mrs. Lacey Ball, a special education teacher at West Vigo High School.

What motivates you?
My motivators are my students, colleagues, and family. I have an amazing group of kids I get to work with daily that brighten my day. They are eager to learn and have the best attitudes. I could not get through the day without my wonderful support team at school and home. My colleagues are always there to support me and answer my crazy amounts of questions :). Everyone’s main goal is to do what is best for the students and you can really feel that sense of commitment. My family motivates me by pushing me to do my best and continues to believe in me. This year has been rough for everyone and it is so great to have people around that continue to motivate me.

How has your job changed due to COVID?
COVID 19 has allowed me to step outside my comfort zone. I have always been a paper/pencil person. This has allowed me to get more creative with my teaching ideas and materials. I have learned so much about technology and grown tremendously in my understanding of such materials.

What is something that people don’t understand about your job?
Something people do not understand about my job is that just because the school day is over, that does not mean your “teacher brain” shuts off. I’m sure a lot of my fellow teachers can agree they have caught themselves waking up in the middle of the night with a wonderful idea. You are constantly reflecting, analyzing, and changing your lessons/techniques for your classroom so that they will better assist the students in your classroom and school.

Why do you love VCSC/your school?
I recently returned to VCSC/West Vigo this school year after being gone for a year. I began my teaching career as a Viking and when I had to leave I was so upset. Coming into my teaching position, I was so nervous. Not being from this tight knit community was intimidating. I quickly realized that there was absolutely nothing to worry about. Everyone at West is so welcoming and helpful. When I received the opportunity to return I could not have been more excited. I can not say enough positive things about everyone I have the pleasure to work with at West and it feels pretty amazing to be a Viking again and be back with the VCSC.

Be sure to check back on #Staffurday–Saturday, that is–as we recognize members of our non-teaching staff. We’ll continue both campaigns through the end of the school year.

Based on improving internal and community COVID-19-related data, the Vigo County School Corporation is working to move all middle and high school students to a four-day-per-week in-person learning schedule. Under this plan, Monday will still be a remote learning day for all middle and high school students, and all students who chose in-person learning this year will attend school Tuesday through Friday. The plan has been developed with consultation from the Vigo County School Corporation COVID-19 Task Force, the Vigo County Health Department, and several local healthcare leaders.

Middle school students will attend school four days per week starting on Tuesday, March 2. High school students will start a four-day-per-week schedule on Tuesday, March 9. The plan was approved in Monday night’s board meeting.

The move to more in-person learning for middle and high school students is focused on improving the academic success and mental health of students. The district will retain Monday as a remote learning day for middle and high school students to continue to practice remote learning and to allow for contact tracing for weekend cases.

“This is an opportunity for us to refocus on our mitigation strategies,” said Dr. Rob Haworth, superintendent of schools. “Our continued defense against the spread of the virus at school coupled with lower community spread has brought us to this day, and we must continue to be safe.”

Student mental health continues to be a concern. In January 2021, the district saw a 83% increase over January 2020 in school-based crisis assessments. By February 10, 2021, the district had already reached the February 2020 total for school-based crisis assessments.

The Vigo County School Corporation has an additional tool to combat the spread of COVID-19. The district has begun testing symptomatic staff members–who are still staying home when symptomatic–using BinaxNOW rapid antigen tests.

The district has studied districts with large high schools like Brownsburg, Avon, and Plainfield–schools with students who have attended school 5 days per week–and has concluded that community spread, not educational model, is the largest driver of cases in the school setting. Other large districts who have been in an A/B schedule at the secondary level like Bartholomew County and Seymour have already announced similar plans to move to full in-person instruction. The district continues to see minimal spread within school settings, including at the elementary level where students attend each day. While quarantine numbers may increase, the district and schools will develop the best possible plans for high traffic situations like lunch.

“We support the idea of a staggered return to in-person learning for middle and high school students as community case numbers and local hospitalization rates continue to hold steady,” said Dr. Darren Brucken, Vigo County Health Commissioner. “The benefits to students in regards to academics, mental health, and interpersonal relationships with our teachers is undeniable. Continued mitigation strategies of distancing and masking will be strictly observed, and we will continue to monitor community case numbers and work together to contact trace cases.”

All schools within Vigo County will be monitored, and staff availability will continue to be the most important indicator of when a school may need a period of remote learning.

Rules for Vigo County School Corporation athletic events will not change at this time, and each participating athlete will still be allotted 4 tickets per contest.

The three traditional high schools within the Vigo County School Corporation—Terre Haute North, Terre Haute South, and West Vigo—will move to an alternating A/B schedule starting tomorrow, Thursday, October 29. Grades K-8 and alternative programs will continue attending school five days per week.

The switch is due to cases transmitted at social events outside of school causing large numbers of students to be quarantined for 14 days because of close contact. An A/B schedule will allow for more distancing in classrooms and cafeterias and reduce quarantines among students, causing less disruption to a student’s education.

“We know the best education we can offer is in-person, five days per week,” said Dr. Rob Haworth, superintendent. “We also know, based on the events of the last two weeks, that our five-day-per-week schedule has become more disruptive than our previous A/B schedule.”

The district will observe one more remote learning Monday on Monday, November 2, allowing high school staff and students to practice with the district’s remote learning tools in the event of full remote learning.

A high school calendar for the rest of the year can be found here.

High school students attended five days per week starting Monday, October 19, after a month of blue and yellow ratings for Vigo County on the state’s color-coded map. Vigo County is orange today for the second week in a row, and the number of daily new cases are the highest since the start of the pandemic.

The district will continue to monitor cases and quarantines in all buildings, especially among staff, to make school-by-school decisions regarding remote learning.

Starting next Monday, October 26, all Vigo County high school students will have remote learning days on Mondays. Remote learning Mondays will continue while Vigo County experiences a significant number of daily new cases and will ensure contact tracing and quarantines resulting from weekend cases.

“We’re not currently experiencing issues with contact tracing, but we want to be cautious,” said Dr. Rob Haworth, superintendent. “Our ability to keep students and staff safe relies on contact tracing and quarantines. We do not want students or staff to walk into our buildings on Monday mornings if they should be at home.”

High school is of greatest concern due to the complicated nature of contact tracing the cases, due to the number of classes students take with a diverse group of students and staff.

The district will also rely on remote learning during inclement weather this winter, and these remote learning Mondays will give staff and students a chance to practice.

Starting on Tuesday, October 27, North and South Vigo High Schools will be utilizing their auditoriums during lunch to allow for greater distancing between students. West Vigo High School is already successfully using the Green Dome during lunch.

Teachers will be working from their buildings on Mondays, and may choose to hold Google Meet sessions with students or post work to Canvas for students to complete. The remote learning schedule has been posted under the high school tab of the section “Current Educational Model” at vigoschools.org.

Students are welcome to use the WiFi outside of any VCSC building, and the district’s WiFi buses will be dispatched throughout the day. A schedule for these buses will be shared with students later this weekend.

Free grab and go meals for high school students will be available from 11-noon in front of North and South Vigo High Schools and Noon-1 p.m. in front of West Vigo High School for high school students who would like a meal.
