President’s Day

About George Washington

By Emma Barbour- Morley

George Washington was one of the founding fathers and the first president of the United States. Washington served as president from 1789 to 1797. (National Archives) In 1885, congress designated February 22 as the first federal holiday to honor a person’s birthday. All federal workers were given the day off. In 1971 the Uniform Monday Holiday Law changed the date to the third Monday in February. (National Archives) Today we know this day as Persident’s Day because this day is between the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. The name of the holiday varies from state to state. Indiana uses the federal name, President’s Day, but others call it Washington’s Birthday. Today the holiday is often associated with a three day weekend and sales at many major stores. I feel that we should celebrate the holiday by honoring all the men who have served as President of the United States.
