About Mrs. Canino<\/h2>\n

Welcome to 5th grade! My name is Mrs. Canino and I found my home here at Ouabache in 2023! Although this is my second year teaching at Ouabache Elementary School, it is my eighth year of teaching overall. Between New York and Indiana, I have taught at both the middle and elementary school levels.<\/p>\n

In addition to teaching fifth grade, I am also lead our Ouabache Math Competition Group for fifth graders and the Prop and Set Design for our yearly musicals.<\/p>\n

I grew up in Upstate New York and moved to Indiana in 2020 with my family.\u00a0 I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood\/Childhood Education and a Master’s Degree in Literacy Education.<\/p>\n

The 5th Grade Classroom Commitments go along with the Ouabache Code of Conduct that each student recites every day during the morning announcements.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a member of the 5th-grade family, I will be responsible.<\/b><\/p>\n

  • I will<\/span> turn in all of my assignments in a timely manner.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • I will not run in the halls and will always walk facing in the direction we are traveling.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • I will not touch or destroy other people\u2019s things.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • I will not dawdle in the bathroom, hallways, classroom, or cafeteria. I will always stay quiet and respect others while they are in class learning.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • I will be quiet during all class transitions and while gathering my supplies in the hall.<\/span><\/li>\n
  • I will be responsible for my Chromebook and bring them to school each day, charged and ready for school-appropriate use.<\/span><\/li>\n

            Discipline<\/b><\/p>\n

            • Because each child is different and each situation is different, our goal is to treat each child with respect and dignity when enforcing a consequence. It is also our goal for our students to learn from his\/her mistakes in the best way possible.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              • We like to encourage positive behavior rather than focus on the negative. The positive consequences of modeling positive behaviors:<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                • Good Character of the Month awards<\/span><\/li>\n
                • Extra free time with a friend to play a game or extra library time<\/span><\/li>\n

                  • Unfortunately, there will be times when negative consequences will be given if positive behavior is not being exhibited. Consequences will follow a progressive scale. The consequences will increase if behavior is not improving. All students will be given a \u201cclean slate\u201d as we all have bad days.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
                      \n
                    1. \u00a0A verbal redirect to all students so no one is singled out.<\/span><\/li>\n
                    2. \u00a0A private verbal warning will be issued, and the teacher and student will have a quick private conversation to discuss what the student needs to successfully transition to get back on task.<\/span><\/li>\n
                    3. \u00a0The student will be moved to a different seat in the classroom so that they can focus on classroom learning.<\/span><\/li>\n
                    4. The student will visit a different classroom for a short period of time to \u201c take a break\u201d and refocus.<\/span><\/li>\n
                    5. The student will eat lunch with the teacher so that we can discuss in private how we can work together to come up with a plan to be more successful.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
                    6. When a student is very disruptive in class and if they continue to be disrespectful, they will lose their recess. During the recess period, they will fill out a behavior reflection sheet to discuss with the classroom teacher before all students return to class.<\/span><\/li>\n
                    7. A phone call home will be made if a student loses a privilege, is extremely disruptive or disrespectful to their peers, or if an office referral is made.<\/span><\/li>\n
                    8.
