Fuqua News

August/September 2022

Welcome to the 2022-2023 school year.

Everyone at Fuqua is looking forward to another successful and exciting year!

Our instructional day begins at 8:15 a.m. Students will be marked tardy if arriving after this time and must check in at the Health Room to get a pass if they arrive late.

COVID-19

Social distancing whenever possible and many new procedures are aimed to help ensure your child stays safe and healthy.  Although these have been shared with you, please feel free to contact the office if there is anything in question.

SCHOOL RULES

Please make time to review the school rules with your child.  Each teacher discussed these on the first day of school.   Your added support will ensure a positive year (One such rule is not wearing flip flops at Fuqua).  The most important school rules are highlighted in our Fuqua School folder.  In addition to these, you may find a complete listing on the Vigo County School Corporation’s website (www.vigoschools.org).

BIRTHDAY PARTIES/VCSC WELLNESS POLICY

Birthdays are important and we want to continue to celebrate them at Fuqua.  Instead of having individual classroom birthday parties each month, we will have a  “Birthday Parade” as we have done in past years.

The VCSC Wellness Policy that was adopted made us more aware of “healthy lifestyle choices” in nutrition and physical activity and contained new restrictions regarding party snacks.  In being respectful to students with food allergies and dietary concerns we have adopted a new Fuqua celebration.  Please do not bring “food treats” for your child’s birthday.  These will not be utilized with our “birthday” procedure.

SAFETY

Outside doors are locked for student safety. Visitors must ring the doorbell located at the main doors on Wheeler Avenue. Our School Protection Officer will greet you at the door and inquire about your visit.  If you are picking up your child, they will be called to meet you at the lobby.  Thank you for your continued support in our efforts to improve the safety of our school!

ATTENDANCE

To improve our school’s attendance rate, we will be closely monitoring all absences.  If your child is not going to be in school, please report the absence to our office prior to 8:45 a.m. on the date of the absence.  Any absence not reported is considered truancy and will be investigated.  Our Health Assistant, Ms. Lewis, will telephone parents/guardians if an absence has not been reported.  We will make every effort to ensure students are present at school on a daily basis.

Please be aware that the VCSC recently adopted a new attendance policy with higher expectations for families.  Please review it on the VCSC website and become familiar with it.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE

For the safety of the students, calls for a change in departure and early departures will not be accepted after 2:20.  Students will board and depart buses on Wheeler Avenue.  Buses will pull along the curb to the far East of the building.  There is a “No Parking” zone in that area.  Please be patient and safety conscious due to the additional traffic in that area.  Cars should not park or move forward into the “No Parking” zone.

ONE MEAL BENEFIT APPLICATION PER FAMILY MUST BE COMPLETED BY A PARENT/GUARDIAN AND APPROVED BY THE VIGO COUNTY SCHOOL CORPORATION, FOOD SERVICE DEPARTMENT, TO RECEIVE FREE/REDUCED MEALS AND TEXTBOOKS. Again this year the application is on-line and can be accessed from the VCSC homepage at vigoschools.orgPARENTS/GUARDIANS WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR TEXTBOOK FEES FOR ANY CHILD NOT APPROVED FOR BENEFITS.

SKYWARD REQUIRED FORMS

Thank you to everyone who has already completed the annual forms on Skyward!

These forms must be completed every year. Parents/Guardians will be provided a Skyward Family Access Account. Please keep all your information on Skyward updated, such as phone numbers, emails, and addresses. Student medical information, parent/guardian custody mandates, do not release or not allowed to pick up information, court documents, and legal  paperwork must always be kept current in Skyward. For the safety of your child(ren), always communicate to the office staff, inform the teacher, and bring copies of this kind of medical and/or custody papers to the office. Fuqua Elementary information will be shared through your child’s take-home folders, student agendas, voice and text messages, emails, your Skyward Family Access Account, our website, our Fuqua PTO Facebook page, and our Fuqua Facebook page.

RULES AND REGULATIONS

We wish all students and staff a safe and secure start to a new school year. It is important that students know the rules and regulations pertaining to the Vigo County School Corporation. Be sure to go over the rules of student conduct with your child. These rules can be found to be posted on the Vigo County School website. Unfortunately, each year we deal with incidents involving students that lead to an expulsion hearing. Many incidents are due to poor decision-making or lack of knowledge of the rules. In this age of technology, we are seeing more issues involving the use of the Internet, Chromebooks, cell phones, text messaging and other high-tech devices. Remember ANYTHING that disrupts the school operations can cause school disciplinary consequences to be assessed. Use of private cell phones in inappropriate ways can lead to disciplinary action.  Use of private computers and instant messaging can have school implications if that message causes a school disruption. Sometimes a student commits an act that he/she feels is just a prank, such as a message written on a wall. Students involved in this type of behavior face school and possibly police sanctions. The cost in terms of lost school time and expense can be great. We implore parents and students to become familiar with the rules of student conduct and follow those rules each and every day. The rules include items such as possession of medication at school, student-to-student interaction as well as possession of forbidden items at school. If you have questions on any rule, call the Office of Student Services (462-4224) and we will be happy to discuss them with you. Your cooperation is appreciated and we wish you the greatest school year ever.

TEXTBOOK RENTAL

A family application must be filed to be eligible for free textbooks.  Parents will be responsible for textbook fees for each child who does not have an application filed.  Regardless of approval, all students are charged a consumables fee.

BACKPACKS & SKATER SHOES

Backpacks with wheels can be brought to school but may not be rolled once in the building. We are finding that the wheels are marking up our floors.  Skater shoes are not to be worn to school for safety reasons, and just as with backpacks with wheels, these shoes damage our floors. Thank you for your cooperation.
