Every year is a great year to celebrate our staff, but this year has shined a bright light on the flexibility and compassion of our incredible staff.

Today, meet Mrs. Roxanne McLeod, an educational assistant at Terre Haute North High School.

What motivates you?
I am motivated by the love I have for the students. I want to do the best I can to equip, empower, and set them up for success.

How has your job changed due to COVID?
My job is primarily working directly with students. Maintaining a connection and trusting relationship with students is more of a challenge while they try and learn remotely. I’m so grateful to have most of our students back in the classroom.

What is something that people don’t understand about your job?
I think one thing people don’t understand is how connected EAs can become with the students. We get to know what they enjoy, what makes them tick, and what motivates them.

Why do you love VCSC/your school?
I love the people I work with. It is such a blessing to witness the kindness and servitude that VCSC employees, from administrators to food service staff to custodians, pour out to students each and everyday. We are a team of people dedicated to the next generation.

Every year is a great year to celebrate our teachers, but this year has shined a bright light on the flexibility and compassion of our incredible staff.

Today we’re highlighting Mrs. Shannon Loughmiller, a Family/Consumer Sciences teacher at Terre Haute North High School.

What motivates you?
My students and my family! Teaching was a great career change a few years ago for my family and I love making a difference in the students’ lives that I get to teach daily. Part of being a teacher in the FACS department is that students often choose to be in your classes and so they tend to be invested and enjoy what they are learning. High school is hard and a lot of our students have a ton of things going on in and outside of school, I want to be a safe place and environment for them to learn Human Services and learn about themselves as we navigate what their future holds in my classes!

How has your job changed due to COVID?
Virtual school is HARD! It’s hard for our students, it’s hard for the teachers, it’s hard for the support systems or lack of at home. I think that our school is navigating uncharted territory the best that they can and I am grateful for that and the support we have gotten this year. I think for myself and the other teachers I spend time with, we have all learned to have more grace this year. Students are struggling with more this year than any other year I have taught and the teachers and staff are struggling too! Corona has not been kind to any of us, it has taken the human connection from our lives and made virtual the normal. In Human Services we talk about the human connection and being kind humans frequently. It has also messed up some of the opportunities that I could have given my students this year, so that was a bummer! They have made the best of this year though and pushed through, I am proud of each of my students!

What is something that people don’t understand about your job?
Teachers have not had more time off this year, if anything we have worked harder. We have created new virtual classrooms, we have learned how to motivate (or at least try) our students virtually and in a classroom that looks and feels different. In the Human Services we talk about ALOT of life, seeing faces is important as you talk about the tough stuff, masks have made class much more disconnected. Students don’t want to talk as much as they used to, they either feel silenced or protected by their masks, whatever it is, they are much quieter when not pushed to speak up. It has been much harder to have conversations and get to know masked kids, however, like I said, they have pushed on and so have we as teachers, so proud of my co-workers and all the hard work and creativity we have had this year!

Why do you love VCSC/your school?
Teaching was a new path for me. I came from working nights and weekends in harsh environments at thankless jobs where I didn’t matter to the clients that I worked with for the most part, they didn’t understand or appreciate those that cared for them. I am grateful to be in a positive work environment with people who care about the people they are serving and want them to succeed! I am grateful for a job I enjoy coming to each and every day.

Be sure to check back on #Staffurday–Saturday, that is–as we recognize members of our non-teaching staff. We’ll continue both campaigns through the end of the school year.

Based on improving internal and community COVID-19-related data, the Vigo County School Corporation is working to move all middle and high school students to a four-day-per-week in-person learning schedule. Under this plan, Monday will still be a remote learning day for all middle and high school students, and all students who chose in-person learning this year will attend school Tuesday through Friday. The plan has been developed with consultation from the Vigo County School Corporation COVID-19 Task Force, the Vigo County Health Department, and several local healthcare leaders.

Middle school students will attend school four days per week starting on Tuesday, March 2. High school students will start a four-day-per-week schedule on Tuesday, March 9. The plan was approved in Monday night’s board meeting.

The move to more in-person learning for middle and high school students is focused on improving the academic success and mental health of students. The district will retain Monday as a remote learning day for middle and high school students to continue to practice remote learning and to allow for contact tracing for weekend cases.

“This is an opportunity for us to refocus on our mitigation strategies,” said Dr. Rob Haworth, superintendent of schools. “Our continued defense against the spread of the virus at school coupled with lower community spread has brought us to this day, and we must continue to be safe.”

Student mental health continues to be a concern. In January 2021, the district saw a 83% increase over January 2020 in school-based crisis assessments. By February 10, 2021, the district had already reached the February 2020 total for school-based crisis assessments.

The Vigo County School Corporation has an additional tool to combat the spread of COVID-19. The district has begun testing symptomatic staff members–who are still staying home when symptomatic–using BinaxNOW rapid antigen tests.

The district has studied districts with large high schools like Brownsburg, Avon, and Plainfield–schools with students who have attended school 5 days per week–and has concluded that community spread, not educational model, is the largest driver of cases in the school setting. Other large districts who have been in an A/B schedule at the secondary level like Bartholomew County and Seymour have already announced similar plans to move to full in-person instruction. The district continues to see minimal spread within school settings, including at the elementary level where students attend each day. While quarantine numbers may increase, the district and schools will develop the best possible plans for high traffic situations like lunch.

“We support the idea of a staggered return to in-person learning for middle and high school students as community case numbers and local hospitalization rates continue to hold steady,” said Dr. Darren Brucken, Vigo County Health Commissioner. “The benefits to students in regards to academics, mental health, and interpersonal relationships with our teachers is undeniable. Continued mitigation strategies of distancing and masking will be strictly observed, and we will continue to monitor community case numbers and work together to contact trace cases.”

All schools within Vigo County will be monitored, and staff availability will continue to be the most important indicator of when a school may need a period of remote learning.

Rules for Vigo County School Corporation athletic events will not change at this time, and each participating athlete will still be allotted 4 tickets per contest.

The three traditional high schools within the Vigo County School Corporation—Terre Haute North, Terre Haute South, and West Vigo—will move to an alternating A/B schedule starting tomorrow, Thursday, October 29. Grades K-8 and alternative programs will continue attending school five days per week.

The switch is due to cases transmitted at social events outside of school causing large numbers of students to be quarantined for 14 days because of close contact. An A/B schedule will allow for more distancing in classrooms and cafeterias and reduce quarantines among students, causing less disruption to a student’s education.

“We know the best education we can offer is in-person, five days per week,” said Dr. Rob Haworth, superintendent. “We also know, based on the events of the last two weeks, that our five-day-per-week schedule has become more disruptive than our previous A/B schedule.”

The district will observe one more remote learning Monday on Monday, November 2, allowing high school staff and students to practice with the district’s remote learning tools in the event of full remote learning.

A high school calendar for the rest of the year can be found here.

High school students attended five days per week starting Monday, October 19, after a month of blue and yellow ratings for Vigo County on the state’s color-coded map. Vigo County is orange today for the second week in a row, and the number of daily new cases are the highest since the start of the pandemic.

The district will continue to monitor cases and quarantines in all buildings, especially among staff, to make school-by-school decisions regarding remote learning.

Starting next Monday, October 26, all Vigo County high school students will have remote learning days on Mondays. Remote learning Mondays will continue while Vigo County experiences a significant number of daily new cases and will ensure contact tracing and quarantines resulting from weekend cases.

“We’re not currently experiencing issues with contact tracing, but we want to be cautious,” said Dr. Rob Haworth, superintendent. “Our ability to keep students and staff safe relies on contact tracing and quarantines. We do not want students or staff to walk into our buildings on Monday mornings if they should be at home.”

High school is of greatest concern due to the complicated nature of contact tracing the cases, due to the number of classes students take with a diverse group of students and staff.

The district will also rely on remote learning during inclement weather this winter, and these remote learning Mondays will give staff and students a chance to practice.

Starting on Tuesday, October 27, North and South Vigo High Schools will be utilizing their auditoriums during lunch to allow for greater distancing between students. West Vigo High School is already successfully using the Green Dome during lunch.

Teachers will be working from their buildings on Mondays, and may choose to hold Google Meet sessions with students or post work to Canvas for students to complete. The remote learning schedule has been posted under the high school tab of the section “Current Educational Model” at vigoschools.org.

Students are welcome to use the WiFi outside of any VCSC building, and the district’s WiFi buses will be dispatched throughout the day. A schedule for these buses will be shared with students later this weekend.

Free grab and go meals for high school students will be available from 11-noon in front of North and South Vigo High Schools and Noon-1 p.m. in front of West Vigo High School for high school students who would like a meal.
